Our Mission

The U.S. teen birth rate (births per 1,000 females aged 15-19) declined by 78% from 1991 to 2021, reaching a record low of 14 births per 1,000 females in 2021; however, teen birth rates vary significantly by state; in 2008, states like Mississippi and Arkansas reported rates exceeding 60 births per 1,000 females aged 15-19, while states like New Hampshire and Massachusetts had rates below 25. Higher teen birth rates are associated with communities experiencing high unemployment, low education, and low income levels. Among teens with a history of poverty, 16.8% had been pregnant at least once by age 17. This rate increased to 28.9% for teens with histories of both poverty and reported child abuse or neglect. Possible reasons for these alarming correlations include low-income communities often having fewer healthcare facilities and providers, making access to contraception and reproductive health education more challenging; and a lack of insurance or easy access to birth control for teens, increasing the likelihood of unprotected sex. Abstinence-only education policies, which are more common in low-income school districts, have been linked to higher teen pregnancy rates. Restrictions on reproductive health services (e.g., parental consent laws for birth control or abortion) disproportionately affect low-income and non-white teens.

Having experienced the isolation and uncertainty that followed sexual violence and a reuslting pregancy—exacerbated by limited financial coverage and a lack of accessible resources—we understand the struggles of navigating medical care, communicating with guardians and peers, and coping with the fallout of such experiences, including academic decline, mental health struggles, and social isolation. This experience has fueled our commitment to ensuring that young women have access to contraceptives, counseling, termination options, and family planning resources. By improving awareness of medical coverage, addressing racial and socioeconomic disparities in teen pregnancy, and advocating for comprehensive sexual education, we hope to make the search for medical care more efficient.
This site offers mental health resources, links to government subisdized programs, and a platform for teens to navigate the throws of reproductive care. We are committed to promoting teen wellness and providing valuable information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between medicaid and Medicare ?.
While both are federal health insurance programs, Medicaid serves low-income individuals and families, regardless of age, whereas Medicare primarily serves people ages 65 or older, though some younger individuals with disabilities do qualify. In California, Medicaid takes the form of MediCAL. You qualify for this program if you are: 138% below the federal poverty line (children and pregnant women may also qualify at a higher income), uninsured and under the age of 21, enrolled in Cal Works, Refugee Assistance, Foster Care, Cal Fresh, or SSI/SSP.
An STD (sexually transmitted disease) and an STI (sexually transmitted infection) are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences. An STI refers to infection by a pathogen that is transmitted through sexual contact; a person can have an STI without displaying symptoms. An STD refers to an STI that has progressed to the point of causing symptoms or health problems. In short, STI means you have a pathogen; STD means the infection has caused symptoms or health issues.
You may qualify for a medical abortion (that is, an oral pill) up to 8 weeks of pregnancy, after that point, a surgical abortion is needed involving general anesthetic. While the average cost of an abortion through planned parenthood is $580, an abortion pill may cost up to $800. An in-clinic surgical abortion is more expensive, wiht the average cost being $715 and a highest cost of $2000 (primarily for second trimester abortions). Surgical Abortions: Pros include no follow up and a less intense physical reaction. The primary con of this operation is its increased cost. Medical Abortions: Pros include accessibility (online clinics can mail the medication to your house) and decreased cost. Cons include pain during the abortion as there is no anesthetic and required folow ups (either in person or online depending ont he nature of the clinic).
